We enjoy creating good architecture and want others to enjoy the fruits of that creativity.
Our underlying ethos is that the art of architecture is continually learned, and our commitment is to both design and build great buildings. Where these processes are entwined we have an enduring desire to review, improve and optimise every aspect of design, from masterplanning at an urban scale to the detail and materiality of our buildings.
RM_A benefits from a long history successfully designing and delivering projects for a wide range of clients for over 40 years.
The studio is led by a dynamic team of directors who have been a large part of that history and continue to take the practice forward with vision and technical expertise that has been developed over the decades.
All the directors continue to take an active role in projects which ensures that they maintain their expertise in design, technology, regulation and policy but at the same time they provide a personal and direct service to our clients.

We enjoy the simplicity and modesty of great architecture. Once we have explored rational and pragmatic concepts, we look beyond that to make something special within the constraints and context.
Our aim is to exceed expectations, to look for innovation – not for innovation’s sake, but to embrace progress and continually seek to improve quality; to surprise and delight our clients and ourselves.
In this way we make sure our clients are happy and they come back to us again because they know we can deliver. At the same time we keep ourselves stimulated by always looking for more; always seeking to learn and to realise potential.

A large part of our ethos is the continued personal growth and development of our team across the practice. RM_A are supportive of all professional development and partnership between education and practice, we are very proud to maintain links with several schools of architecture.
We have been fortunate to be able to support several of our team through the Oxford Brookes University Architecture Apprenticeship focussing on research-led design, combining practice based experience with academic research and learning and feeding that back into the practices own research and development. We are also part of the London School of Architecture Practice Network and we were one of the first partner practices for The University of Sheffield School of Architecture’s pioneering Collaborative Practice Course. Reflective design is central to their programme, testing creative and critical ideas, whilst at the same time developing fundamental architectural skills.

These courses allow students to undertake their post graduate studies while working, bringing education and practice closer together and improving inclusive access to the profession. The combination of university education within a professional context provides both students and RM_A with a unique opportunity to engage at the highest level of current research and education. Many of our team also act as visiting tutors and critics at various UK schools of Architecture.
We are also proud to mentor several students through their Part 3 Professional Practice qualifications each year with a wide range of universities. This is the final stepping stone for architects entering the Profession either continuing from the other UK qualifications or converting from international qualification. Understanding the profession and our responsibilities is at the heart of delivering an exceptional service to our clients and collaborating positively with our project teams.
We encourage continual personal and professional development within the practice establishing a friendly, supportive environment for all with training, mentoring and CPD to suit each of our ambitions and life goals.

REGENERATION
The growing pressure for land in our urban centres requires creative solutions to reveal opportunities.
Our expertise follows precisely these challenges through the sustainable regeneration of urban brownfield sites with large scale, mixed use and residential-led projects.
These are often on complex and sensitive sites influenced by local heritage, contaminated land, noise or flood risk. These constraints become opportunities to inform a brief and inspire a concept to stimulate regeneration, create communities and reenergise neighbourhoods.
Exemplary regeneration extends far beyond the site, creating improved local environments, generating optimum value and responding collectively to the aspirations of clients, local authorities and communities.

MASTERPLANNING
Through over 40 years of practice designing a wide range of building types we have established the skills to create and deliver sustainable new neighbourhoods and to enhance and strengthen existing communities, providing new places to work and to play and new homes for both affordable and private sectors.
Consultation is key to understanding the priorities and ambitions of stakeholders and communities.
Great masterplanning knits development and regeneration into its context wherever that may be and unlocks further opportunities for clients and communities beyond the site boundary.
Our holistic understanding of the constraints, and fine attention to detail at every scale, ensures meaningful, successful and sustainable development.

ARCHITECTS
We believe in creating a dynamic flexible working environment, a place for a strong team, without losing the close-knit relationships we forge between us. We are a team of individuals each with a set of unique skills, but collectively with a greater combined strength. It is important to us not to forget the team spirit in a busy office.
We embrace discussion, debate and critique to enhance our work and test new ideas for the future, continually learning to realise potential. We are always looking for ambitious new members of the team who have the tenacity, confidence and creativity to produce outstanding design.
Career progression at RM_A is according to talent and impact. We all enjoy hard work, a cooperative approach to working together, and a collective ambition to succeed.
