Ravenswood is a new residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of Ipswich, on the site of the former Ipswich Airport.
The proposals take inspiration from the Suffolk vernacular and build on the style of earlier developments at Ravenswood. Our design concept for sites s & t includes a site layout that promotes passive solar design, responds to the constraints and opportunities of the existing context and emphasises the formal geometry of the existing Ravenswood masterplan. Long, radial, finger-blocks on the outer crescent, with private gardens in between, allow nature to permeate inward and allow views out from the centre of the site. A series of feature ’tower ’ houses face out onto the country park and marl the corners and entrances to the scheme. These create a unique identity for the site, animate the development edge, and provide fantastic views of the country park and the scenery beyond.
This scheme demonstrates good urban design principles in establishing the site layout which promotes safety and security through causal surveillance. A clear hierarchy of space defines public realm through clear boundaries, shared surfaces giving priority to pedestrians and distinct private gardens.
